Young Giuseppe Minardi Sprints to Victory
The 46th edition of the Giro di Lombardia was held on October 26, 1952.
The starter’s flag dropped at 10:00 a.m. in Milan and the race rolled onto the Lombardia countryside.
Race Status:
By the time the race reached the approaches to the early Brinzio climb (56 km / 226 km), a breakaway of 20-riders established a lead of 2‘15” over the chase group containing Fausto Coppi (Bianchi) and Gino Bartali (Bartali-Urus).
The disorganized peloton struggled to get formed. The field split into small groups.
As the race approached the climb of the Madonna di Ghisallo, the pace of the race intensified.
Over the Ghisallo summit (135 km /226 km), a solo Ferdi Kubler (Frejus) held a 1’32” lead on an elite chase group and 1’50” on Coppi.
On the descent of the Ghisallo, Kubler increased his lead to over 2’00” before he began to faulter.
10 kms from the finish a small group caught the leader.
The leaders worked well together, riding into Milan to contest the sprint.
The now eight riders arrived at the Vigorelli Velodrome together. Young Italian sprinter Giuseppe Minardi (Legnano) launched a powerful sprint to claim Lombardia victory.
Unable to match his teammate’s acceleration in the final straight Nino Defilippis (Legnano) finished in second place.
